The K Club has just been announced as the Irish Golf Tour Operators Association, Golf Resort of the Year at a glitzy awards ceremony at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle, Co. Down (Monday 19th October). The award comes hot on the heels of last week’s announcement by The European Tour that The K Club will stage next years, Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation from 19-22 May. The Irish Golf Tour Operators Association (IGTOA) is the national representative body for the Irish golf tourism Industry and is pro-active in the development, promotion, sales and marketing of Irish golf and tourism both at home and abroad.
The K Club’s Director of Golf, Sharon Smurfit was at the awards ceremony along with other members of The K Club team. Speaking on behalf of The K Club she said, “I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of our management and golf team. It has been a phenomenal year for us as our renovations and extension has just been completed and of course, just last week we were announced as the venue for next year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. It’s an exciting time for The K Club and huge thanks to the IGTOA for recognising us in this way.

Over €20 million has been spent renovating and extending The K Club in recent times. Work started in earnest when Dr. Michael Smurfit purchased the property outright in 2012 and became the 100% owner. Since then, renovations and improvements include building two all weather tennis courts, resurfacing the entrance avenue, opening a new Thai Restaurant and commissioning new handmade Connemara Carpets for the lobby and public areas. In March of this year, construction work began and work on the new Liffey Wing and has now been completed, well ahead of schedule. The new wing contains 70 bedrooms bringing the total number of rooms at The K Club to 140. Developed in the exact same style as the original house, the Liffey Wing has been sympathetically created and blends seamlessly with the old. A new bar, named after Dr. Smurfit’s Melbourne Cup winning horse, Media Puzzle has also been added as part of the renovation programme. Super-fast dedicated fibre broadband has been installed and is capable of reaching download speeds of up to 250Mb while a new conference room, ‘Inis Mór’ has also been created.

The K Club is set on 550 acres of mature parkland and beautiful formal gardens and will celebrate its 25th birthday in 2016. There are two Arnold Palmer designed golf courses situated on either side of the River Liffey which flows through the estate, a state of the art health club with a swimming pool and gym, a playground in the Victorian Walled Garden, tennis courts, junior golf, a kids club and several restaurants and bars. Activities on offer include golf, fly fishing, horse riding, falconry and archery.
