Grand Canal, Venice

  • This is a magnificent scene on the Grand Canal in Venice, which has been immortalised over many centuries by both established and lesser known artists.

This modern version of the view of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute from the Ponte dell’Accademia is an early morning scene.

The artist has chosen a long view to the Church, which is treated in a contre jour manner, outlined against the hazy sunlight climbing over the city. The foreground and middle distance is more directly articulated from nature, so that the feathery lightness of the Church is in contrast with the buildings on the right and the anchor poles for the gondolas, some of which can be seen moving gently along the tidal waters of this great city that has fascinated artists, visitors and invading armies throughout history.

Born in Lincolnshire in 1950, Roy Petley's career has spanned over thirty years during which time he has established his reputation as one of the finest figurative artists living in Britain today. His work is included in the Ulster Museum, Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane and in many prestigious private collections including those of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.
