Celebrating our Newly Refreshed, Renewed and Renovated Property
August 11, 2015
The K Club is a 5 AA Red Star Hotel & Resort located in the pretty village of Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland, just 30 minutes from Dublin Airport and Dublin City Centre . The equivalent of an AAA Five Diamond property, The K Club is a proud, long-standing member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts Legends Collection and is also a member of Virtuoso and American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts . Represented by Celebrated Experiences and Waterstone Marketing the resort is synonymous with luxury and elegance the world over.
We have has just finished an extensive renewal and renovation programme and the resort is looking better than ever. Over €20 million has been spent renovating, renewing and extending the property which is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most iconic resorts. Work started in earnest when our owner, Dr. Michael Smurfit purchased the property outright in 2012 and became the sole proprietor. Since then, renovations and improvements include building two all weather, tennis courts, resurfacing the entrance avenue, opening a new Thai Restaurant and commissioning new, handmade Connemara Carpets for the lobby and public areas. In March of this year, His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco officially turned the sod on the new bedroom wing and construction work began on our new bedroom wing. Work on the new wing has now been completed and we are getting ready to welcome our first guests to the bedrooms in the coming weeks.
The new wing is located to the west side of the hotel and contains 70 bedrooms bringing our total number of rooms at The K Club to 140. Developed in the exact same style as the original house, the new wing has been sympathetically created and blends seamlessly with the old. There are two new categories of rooms, the luxurious Liffey Deluxe room category and the Barton Suites as well as four new accessible bedrooms. Many of the rooms enjoy views to the River Liffey, the 17th hole, or the gardens while most ground floor rooms enjoy direct access to a private terrace.
Bedrooms are from 410 sq ft to 800 sq ft in size and feature lofty ceilings, air conditioning, huge windows, mini bars, Nespresso coffee machines and spacious hand painted bathrooms, complete with twin sinks, extra deep baths and separate power showers with traditional and rain water heads. Other features such as reading lights in the mahogany headboards have been added along with USA and European plugs for convenience. The Wi-Fi throughout the resort and within the bedrooms has been upgraded to high-speed fibre broadband and is capable of reaching download speeds of up to 250mb. Meanwhile, the interiors have been designed to echo classical elegance, comfort and of course luxury. Furnishings are in keeping with the original Straffan House which was built in 1832 by the famous French, wine making, Barton family.
The new room categories also allow us to provide up to 28 adjoining or interconnecting rooms. This makes these rooms ideal for families as some rooms have the addition of pull out luxurious sofa beds. Each room features Super King beds that can be separated to provide 3ft 3inch twin beds, perfect for adjoining rooms for children or equally for golfers or spa enthusiasts who might wish to share a room but in great comfort . Linen is the highest quality Egyptian linen with a thread count in excess of 300 and duvets which are now provided as standard with duck down filling.
In room bath products are provided by Voya which is a certified organic product, made from seaweed hand harvested off the west coast of Ireland. The product is also used in our resort spa, K Spa, with fresh seaweed used in many of our spa treatments .
Another addition which we recently brought to the market was the availability of Straffan House for private and exclusive hire. A palatial property located on the grounds of our resort, it enjoys all of the comforts and luxuries of the hotel in an exclusive and private setting. The house spans an expansive 34,000 sq ft and is arranged with three storeys over basement. The lower ground floor houses the swimming pool with ‘swim up bar’, spa, gym, games room and tempting views of the glass fronted thermostatically controlled wine cellar. There are 10 bedrooms in total and hire of the house also comes with a private chef, concierge and house manager in order to make your stay as convenient and relaxing as possible. Straffan House has direct access onto the Ryder Cup Palmer Course and enjoys wonderful panoramic views of our famous fairways.
A new bar and food service area has also been developed within the hotel, the ‘Media Puzzle Bar’ is a wonderful space to enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif or a pint of the black stuff! Named after Dr. Smurfit’s Melbourne Cup winning horse, the new bar is painted in a classic racing green and features large windows and French doors to our manicured gardens. It is located adjacent to the Vintage Crop Cocktail Bar, also named after another famous and historic winner of the Melbourne Cup which was is also owned by Dr. Smurfit.
The K Club is set on 550 acres of mature parkland and beautiful formal gardens and we will celebrate our 25th birthday in 2016. There are two championship golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer at the resort including the world famous Palmer Ryder Cup Golf Course and the Smurfit Course.Category Hotel
